It delights me to no end that my loved ones always think of me whenever they see the mangled carcass of some unlucky animal on the side of the road. It delights me even more when they send me the photgraphic evidence of their devotion to my perverse hobby.

Aside from the highways of Mexico, cow road-kill is not especially abundant, thanks largely to the invention of barbed wire. A cow is a large and rather sturday animal, and hitting one with any degree of velocity must be modestly painful to one's vehicle.

Some day soon, I will re-post my story of "The Best Road Kill Ever" from the San Diablo Archives. In the meantime, I present these two lovely shots from Western Australia, kindly forwarded by Mike and Devona.

Every dead wombat along this stretch of road near Fitzgerald Falls featured a few parts from the offending vehicle. A small act of vengeance.

10 days traipsing around the Black Rhino Intensive Protection Zone in Hwange National Park allowed me to inspect carcasses of exotic animals. My guides thought I was a ittle kooky having my picture taken with every skull we found, but I wanted to take the skulls home with me!

The day before my arrival, an elephant had an unfortunate collision with a train. The train was wrecked, but every yard was filled with strips of elephant meat drying in the sun. At the auto repair shop, I saw a man leaning over the stump of an elephant leg with a chainsaw. He looked up and smiled as I rode past.

I know I said I wasn't going to pretend this blog had anything to do with art, but I love the halo effect created by the patterns in the concrete coupled with the blurry blackberry photo of this pigeon that was obliterated in a parking garage in San Jose.

Note that wombat roadkill seldom displays any sign of destruction and little if any splatter. They must make a horrible dent in your car, the sturdy little buggahs.

One of the advantages of my roadkill hobby is the opportunity to get up close and personal with animals that would otherwise avoid or eat you. I have a recurring fantasy that I will begin to collect specimens for preservation, but despite my fascination, I am still squeamish about touching dead things...much more so about putting them in my trunk.

It took me a long time to figure out just what had happened here. I imagined the back half of this deer wedged under some bumper driving down A1A until I realized this deer was probably not road kill at all but more likely the victim of poaching. Still, I was once more amazed by the veritable rainbow of color that exists inside ungulates. Lucky this website is not smell-o-rama enabled.

Usually, I am more interested in the biology of roadkill, but I was drawn to the aesthetic qualities of this specimen on the campus of the University of Sydney.

"As a kid, my dad would point out various roadkill...He was an expert in identifying the most awful .
When I was very small he would say...hey look over there...what a wierd place for that racoon to have decided to take a nap..on his back on the side of the road.
He was really a nice guy ...swear it. This always amuses me. I now do this to people. I do know it's a wierdo thing to do but still ...can't help it.
I love animals so this really strikes people as strange when I say excitedly...hey look, a wild boar...they look and get upset...it's dead ...roadkill.. gross. Why did you make me look at it? "

Kevin has stood by me while I photograph a lot of roadkill, but he was particularly disturbed by this specimen. "Why the fuck would any one run over a turtle?!" He demanded of the universe.

One of the things I love most about road kill is that it affords one the opportunity to make a close study of animals that might otherwise kick you in the stomach and gouge out your eyes. I never would have guessed that kangaroos have such ugly penises. I think there is a stiff joke in here somewhere, but I'm not going to go looking for it.
